Wangari Digest: Where finance creates sustainable futures

Many financial professionals think that sustainability is just a regulatory burden. Extra work. Unnecessary costs.

Not us.

At Wangari, we believe that in allocating capital towards businesses that provide value not only to their customers and shareholders, but also to the planet. We believe that this sort of capital allocation will also make investors’ pockets fuller in the long run.

Wangari Digest exists to inform financial professionals about recent developments in sustainable finance, climate finance, ESG and similar topics. But it also exists to inspire financial innovation.

We believe that win-win-win situations can be initiated by sharing valuable ideas and informing financial professionals about what’s shaping up the planet. A win for them, a win for their clients, and a win for the wider world.

Strong beliefs, backed by science

Our beliefs didn’t come to us in our dreams.

Our founder and lead author, Ari, spent many years as a researcher in particle physics. After endeavors like building models to simulate dark matter, he realized that the world might need his brainpower on solving more urgent problems.

He then spent a year modeling climate risks at a large insurance firm before getting increasingly interested in capital markets.

Insurance is important for a number of reasons, including resilience and adaptation to a changing world. But to Ari and his team at Wangari, long-term power is in the hand of capital investors and not of insurance underwriters.

This lead to the founding of Wangari, a company where Ari and his team use ESG- and sustainability-related insights to bring financial models to the next level. The name gives hommage to Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai. The founding ethos of the company echoes story of Maathai’s life: Get up and do what’s right for the world, even if that feels uncomfortable in the short term.

Had Ari and his team been in the simple game of profit maximalisation, they would have started an investment fund. But at Wangari, it’s about the bigger picture. Wangari is about serving the financial world by aligning profit with sustainability. This means sharing their insights and financial models with all types of investors.

The little alpha that is our logo refers to the many alphas in the financial world. Wangari aims to supply the best and most accurate alphas to its clients by using newly available data (for example ESG-related data points, news, and other direct and indirect financial data), rigorous research, and financial innovation.

Wangari Digest is a distillation of all the insights that resulted from founding this company and that continue to inform our work in financial modeling.
